子曰(자왈)

君子有三戒(군자유삼계)하니

少之時(소지시)엔 血氣未定(혈기미정)이라 戒之在色(계지재색))이요.

及其壯也(급기장야)하여는 血氣方剛(혈기방강)이라 戒之在鬬(계지재투)요.

及其老也(급기로야)하여는 血氣旣衰(혈기기쇠)라 戒之在得(계지재득)이니라.

공자왈,

군자에게는 세 가지 경계할 것이 있으니,

젊어서는 혈기가 안정되지 않았으므로 여색(女色)을 조심하여야 하고,

장성하여서는 혈기가 한창 강하므로 싸움을 조심해야 하고,

늙어서는 혈기가 이미 약해졌기 때문에 탐내는 것을 조심해야 한다.

論語•季氏 제7장의 글,

•戒경계할계, •及미칠급, •壯장성할장, ∙•剛굳셀강, •鬪싸울투, •衰쇠할쇠,

●The Master said: "There are three things which the superior man guards against. In youth, when the physical powers are not yet settled, he guards against lust. When he is strong and the physical powers are full of vigor, he guards against quarrelsomeness. When he is old, and the animal powers are decayed, he guards against covetousness."
